Anticipated Jobs Growth and Jobs in Decline
2023 - How Comfortable Are You?
ANTICIPATED JOBS GROWTH AND JOBS IN DECLINE
Michelle Bentley, General Manager, Hender Careers
With 2023 on the horizon and possible thoughts you may have regarding this year, your current job, or finishing a Uni course or similar, itâs now time to think of next year and what may be!
Keeping a close eye on the jobs market (as we at Hender Careers do) is helpful to understand the movement of industries and jobs growth or decline when reflecting on what is and what could be. A recent article by demographer Simon Kuestenmacher, The Australian jobs on the rise, and the ones disappearing, published in Indaily highlights important considerations that may enhance or inhibit career opportunities in certain industries and roles.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has reviewed around 1300 jobs between the last two census 2016 and 2021. Almost needless to say of 25 job categories in growth the health care arena has had a massive growth of 95,212 or 72% with no sign of slowing, with policy and planning managers second (they organise, strategise, advise, direct and coordinate etc) and a growth of 30,120, over 50%, and delivery drivers coming in third with an increase of 29,053. No doubt Covid a major contributor to some of these increases.
Conversely, of 25 job categories in decline, they are mainly repetitive white-collar jobs. The top three in decline are receptionists / secretaries down 22,867 jobs, waiters down 19,484 and third taxi drivers declined by 13,393. Contributing factors were no doubt advances in technology, the pandemic, market competition from Uber and the loss of international workers.
Itâs important to note some jobs may have been available (eg cafĂ© workers wanted â please apply!) but not the workers! Hopefully that may turn around between the next census, as travel confidence resumes. We also desperately need to bolster employment vacancies in all forms of health care, childcare and as support workers, aside from some specialised technical areas.
To assist you in your âplotting and planningâ re your career and job opportunities for 2023 see the tables below showing the top 25 GROWTH job categories and 25 in DECLINE.
This high-level statistical snapshot provides a handy insight, particularly if job security is a priority.
Good luck for your âwhat next?â in your career!
